Slatina Beach in Opatija is like a portal between two worlds – to the south it looks towards the blue sea and the islands, while to the north it offers a view of the green forested hinterland criss-crossed with historical paths and torrential streams. The most famous among them is Vrutki stream with a small attractive waterfall and a path right next to it that leads to the famous Carmen Sylva forest path of Opatija.
Named after the Romanian Queen Elisabeth who used to walk through these forests for hours in search of inspiration for her poems, this trail under the green treetops will lead you to the Vela Fortica resting spot in Pobri, which offers a fantastic view of the next stop along your route – Volosko.
Due to its numerous excellent restaurants and bars, Volosko is today a well-known place on the Croatian culinary scene. In one of the ‘Feel&Taste’ restaurants, you can taste dishes based on fresh fish and local ingredients all year round, or savour delicious desserts and coffee in the Mediterranean atmosphere of this small town with its narrow alleys and stone steps that hide numerous galleries and art ateliers.
Explore the cultural hotspots of Volosko, such as the Mala soba atelier, the Žana Atelier-Gallery, or the creative studio of the academic painter Claudio Frank. Do not forget to visit the Church of St Anne that dominates the main street, as well as the interesting interpretation centre dedicated to the world-famous scientist Andrija Mohorovičić of Volosko. Buy some local products in the Prokulica and Okus Kvarnera organic food shops, and take a break in the Skalinada small tavern where you can enjoy a light meal and a glass of wine, or purchase some fresh olive oil from the OPG Červar family farm.
Round off this green and blue adventure with a walk along the Lungomare coastal promenade toward Opatija, which begins at the small Volosko harbour locally known as mandrać and leads past some of the famous landmarks of Opatija, such as the house where the world-renowned scientist Andrija Mohorovičić was born, Angiolina Park, and the statue of the Girl with the Seagull.
